This is a really great read, and it definitely applies to guard. So many of the things my instructors did and said during my time performing make so much more sense now that I’m an instructor, even if they seem harsh.
Performers—your instructors are NOT out to get you; they only want to see you improve. That’s their job: to instruct.They can’t hold your hand, because YOU are the one performing.
I remember, in my first year coaching, having a kid tell me he wasn’t comfortable dancing. I explained that I wouldn’t be doing my job if I didn’t push him outside his comfort zone and teach new skills. He almost quit, but ended up sticking with it and was probably one of our strongest dancers. He took ownership, and I was (and am) very proud of him.
